Certificate in Addiction Studies Introduction: This certificate level course is designed to provide participants with knowledge and skills to respond positively to addiction related issues as they arise at work or in the community. Participants may progress to a Diploma on successful completion of the Certificate.
Course Aim: The aim of this course is to provide participants with a broad overview of key theoretical frameworks in relation to substance misuse and dependence, and to enable them to develop basic helping and intervention skills.
Course Content: The course contains 4 modules:
Course Introduction & Leaning Support · Overview of key aspects of the course · Introduction to Themes & Principles · Study Skills · Presentation Skills
Substance Use, Misuse & Dependence · Attitudes to substance misuse & dependence · Overview of treatment approaches in drug and alcohol dependence · Models of rehabilitation
Social & Community Issues · Community Studies · Social Analysis Personal, Organisational & Vocational Issues · Personal Awareness · Self-care · Professional debates within drug and alcohol services
Course Duration One year part-time 1 evening per week (Mondays 7-9:30 pm)
Admission Requirements • Experience of working in a community setting • Experience of working with alcohol or drug related problems • Openness to reflect on one’s own practice, attitudes and beliefs • Commitment to learning in a group setting • Participants must be 23 years or over
Assessment Procedures 85% Minimum Attendance Participation in Class Assignments and Projects
Award NUI Maynooth Certificate in Addiction Studies
Progression NUI Diploma in Addiction Studies
